I'm Calvin — a backend-leaning full-stack developer based in Ceres, in South Africa's Western Cape.

I like the unglamorous end of building things: the part where you figure out why the data doesn't add up, why the deploy is flaky, why the architecture decision you made six months ago is now either paying off or biting you. Interfaces are fine, but I'm happiest a few layers down — APIs, databases, the plumbing that has to actually work when nobody's looking at it.

That instinct came from actually doing the unglamorous work. At YearBeyond I spent months validating and diagnosing data pipelines feeding dashboards people relied on to make real decisions — the kind of job where being right matters more than being fast. Before that, at the Waitrose Foundation, I was on the other side of the same problem: training people to actually use the software (CAMI) rather than just deploying it and hoping, plus the very physical work of getting labs online — Wi-Fi, hardware, and enough cybersecurity training that people didn't undo it all in a week. Earlier still, mentoring 50 tutors for YearBeyond taught me more about logistics under pressure than any course did.

My first real client work was a website for a local mechanic shop — JCS Auto Mech — the kind of project where the client doesn't care about your stack, they care whether the contact form actually reaches their phone. That's a good discipline to carry forward.

Since then I've built a few things I'm genuinely proud of: SkillSync SA, a service marketplace with real auth/booking/payment flows; EcoWater SA, an irrigation and water-analytics dashboard for an industry I knew nothing about going in; and — because I'm stubborn — I built the same task manager twice, once in Node/Express/Mongo and once in Spring/React, just to see which decisions actually mattered and which were just habit.

I finished a Diploma in Information Technology through UNISA in 2025, studying while working, which is its own kind of lesson in prioritization.

Outside of work: I'm slowly working through robotics and space as topics I actually understand rather than just find cool, I read more ancient history than is strictly useful for a day job, and I've got a long-running interest in hip hop and in finding the less obvious places to go rather than the ones everyone already knows about. This site — rebuilt from scratch in plain PHP because I wanted to actually enjoy maintaining it — is where a lot of that shows up over time, not just the professional stuff.
